Chatham Dockyard 1940's Weekends.

Chatham Dockyard 1940's Weekends.

Every year in the Medway towns we have a lot of festivals. Some free and some not.
One of the largest paid events in the ex Chatham Royal Naval Dockyard 1940's event that takes place every September. Normally over two or three days this is one of the largest get togethers for anyone that like to dress up 1940's style. Quite often it feels that well over half those that turn up are in authentic clothing and most of the others at least make an effort. It's so easy to get pictures that almost feel authentic and if it wasn't for the odd camera in shot or modern wrist watch or jewelry or other small item of modern lifestyle you would be almost back into the past including air raid sirens, concert parties and everyday life from that era.

The Gang Show.
On entering last year's doors the gang show welcomed people with singing and radio show style 'programs' and you could have stayed there for hours if there wasn't even more to see.

I know some of you have seen a colour version of the shot above before in my gallery but not many have seen the shot it comes from.
As with so many times I go event shooting the crowd is so immense at times it's hard to get a shot without someone in the foreground. or without unwanted background. Therefore a good deal of cropping is sometimes needed to get rid of distractions. Unlike the war and Peace show at the Hop farm the 1940s weekend at Chatham is not as military vehicle based but much more people based. If you want to get into candid or street photography this type of event is good to go to. First people expect to be photographed and if anything are a bit exhibitionist so don't mind. Second, because of that it's easy to practice more clandestine styles of shooting to get the unguarded moments that you would need in street photography. So the next stop for me is a covered machine shop that today houses the Sync Port Lindy Hoppers dance group.

These guys and gals teach all forms of forties dance to anyone and everyone and are as fun as they come. I'll leave you with a few images.

This time I didn't have a really short focal length lens and the furthest I could zoom out was 105mm. Not so close ! This presented problems with both focus and getting anyone into shot as well as shooting between the crowds as I moved around the back of them.

I think this may be the main couple in charge of the group.
They certainly seem the most knowledgeable.

They have pieces of gaffa tape on the soles of their shoes. I'm never sure if is this is to prevent slipping or to encourage it.

What ever they are on it's great, infectious, and you can watch them dance and explain how it was repeated around the country and learnt by others during the war years.
Informative, interesting, and an unusual take on living history.

I enjoyed taking these shots in the machine shop but time to move on to outside and into the parade ground to see a bit more entertainment now but this time in the form of a front line style show for the boys.

Outside we get ' The Forces Sweetheart' style of show on the back of an army lorry. This time the microphone is not so authentic but the songs and passion of the performers are. With this Lass I stood to the side of the main seating area and stood waiting , pointing pretending to take pictures until I was noticed and maybe because she thought I was taking interest started to stare straight at my camera which in this instance I wanted. This picture is heavily cropped to get the close up.

Nothing like a couple of sexy singing nurses to get the boys going. Most of the audience couldn't keep their eyes off of them. Certainly these two couldn't.

Sorry, did I say boys?
I must have meant this lot then. Yes I know one has turned around but not 'One of the Boy's ' :)

If you noticed a line under the image it's because from here on end I'll upload  pictures so you can click on them to get to larger versions for those interested. As you can see there are empty seats, and dotted around the dockyard there are seats all over during this event but I'm going to leave all the song and dance for a while to find some of those vehicles I said weren't here in such large numbers as at the War and Peace Show.

Motorcycles seem a popular way to get around the dockyard and a popular way for enactors to give lifts.

The Dockyard site itself is very large and there are electric wheelchairs for hire on the site if needed. Most of what is going on is accessible except the more obvious like tours of the submarine and warships. Normally at least every hour the enactors gather somewhere to either enact an air raid or embarkation or evacuation of wounded.

The shot above is from a previous visit and is part of a set taken with my S100fs. They show more the size of the dockyard and the buildings there . If you wish to visit the set simply click the picture.

The picture below is cropped and taken at 420mm to try to get some more atmosphere into the picture.

If you don't buy a program and wonder what's about to go on and where it may be an idea to follow some of the pro togs around when they start looking at their shooting guides. For those of you with cameras capable of getting a decent zoom in it can be time to see what the Pros use to get their shots.

They are easy enough to spot carrying only their gear and hanging around in small groups. Not even bothering to blend into what they are shooting unlike most of the keener actors that also carry their cameras with them. Here's one looking at his shooting note schedule.

No he wouldn't do that in this dusty environment would he?

Just goes to show some people just don't worry about dust and dirt and that gear has seen a lot of rough use.

Anyway they've served their purpose this is the next enacted event.  Lets try to get to the front for a good spot and take some more piccies.

Best to stay where you are told as they have extra security in these sections Smile

No idea where Dock Green is but he seems to have been able to get here for the day. "Watch that there I'm keeping an eye on you".

This time it's the enactment of the arrival of a ship with both wounded and fleeing civilian refugees coming through a rough military version of customs.

I'm getting a bit pressed by the crowds by now not having the luxury of being able to wander around less crowded spaces as the event togs do, so I wander off for a general look around some of the quieter areas and try my hand at more street style photography.

Children play, friends chat, out of sight of the main crowds.

Any corner you turn there's a picture to be had. Always make sure you have enough batteries and spare cards.

No. It's a Tank commander's helmet.

Another place to put your feet up and have a drink or something to eat while being entertained is one of the covered slipways originally use to build ships away from spying satelites.

There is a food and drink bar just to the left.  Honest !

On my way out of the Dockyard though, one more peak at the Lindy Hoppers.

Every year more and more people turn upto this dressed for the occasion, and as much as I'd like to stay all day it's probably time for me and these people to toddle off.

Cracking photos in a cracking blog. Great character shots.

I know that concentrating on the girl in red dancing the Lindyhop was a device to get over the length of the lens you had but I think its one of the best photos.

I hope I can Lindy Hop (or something similar) at that MC guy's age!

I must get to one of these events. I believe there may be one at the Nene Valley Railway later  this year.  They look fantastic fun.

Brilliant Ray.  Right through the photoblog, I love the focusing.  Your photo feature post (brilliant it is too) comes to fruition in this.  Great examples of what good use of DOF can do.  An interesting blog Ray, to read and to look at.  The photography to me, is brilliant.  I must read that photo feature again and try this sort of stuff myself.

Cheers Ray, educational in more ways than one.

Fascinating blog Ray. Excellent shots in such difficult circumstances and I love the narrative, both interesting and informative.

I'm impressed with the efforts and lengths these people go to for authenticity of a by-gone era, so effective. The 40's is certainly a fascinating era and bring back many lovely memories for me grilling my grandad for a history project for school. Thank you for sharing Smile

Wonderful, Alison

Hi Eddie.

Since it became a world heritage center the historic dockyard as it's now known has held these events, though a long time ago when the navy was still here we had open days that drew far more crowds, but then the dockyard was much larger. Most of the ground has now been used for two universities and a college as well as a large housing estate and shopping complex with additional visitor attractions.

Have never heard of Gordon barracks sorry. Before my time I expect. I've only been here twenty sixish years.

The quality of these (given that I am seeing them at a small size), is fantastic.   Make me happy and tell me they were taken with a FujiFilm Finepix HS10!

They are also really fine in terms of just being darn good photographs, you've got a great eye.

Fantastic Ray, absolutely fantastic.   A cracking set of candids; you've caught everyone perfectly. I love the black and white image at the start, really suits the 40's theme.  Oh to have the energy of those two dancing, and the flexibility.

Thanks for putting this together, really enjoyed it. Top marks.

Can I thank everyone for the wonderful responses.

I just got in and didn't expect this.

Thank you all.

It does make a person feel that it's worth doing more in future but this one was in part because I said I would do this one and never got round to it.

It's also in part because I give so much advice it's nice to put something up to try to show people I'm not all talk and they can can make there own mind up how full of it I am for themselves Smile

The kick that got it going though was the question about 'Is the quality of jpgs good enough?' which I hope I've proved for some applications is more than adequate.

In reply to specific replies so far then.

Hi John.

The focus on that Lindy Hop photo was deliberate, I wasn't that close Wink Thanks for the thumbs up.

To Steve.

You are doing OK on your own. You are getting there. Scarily so, but thanks for the compliment.

Hi Kev.

I wouldn't know as I've never had time in hospital but I feel I've missed something Wink

Hi Eddie.

Ah, I know where you mean now and can tell you it's housing. Sorry. We still have the Royal Engineers and Gurkha regiments and a few others close by but not in the numbers there once was. The last of the naval presence I think moved out sometime in the last two years though that's difficult to tell completely.

Hi Angie.

I understand your concerns.

You must have been very young and coming from London would have been a bit more of a burden than some other areas, but for my mother and father it was their glory years, with my father really enjoying the north Atlantic, ( really  despite being sunk off of Iceland ) and my mother being able to leave home to go to work, which being the youngest in the family probably would never have happened if it had not been for the war.

As my parents got older and my mother giving way to alzheimer'stoward the end one of the few things that lifted her spirits where the old songs which I scoured the land for making tapes for her to play. I bet I have one of the largest collections of recordings from 1929 through to 1950. ( I now tha war wasn't through that but those years where  the ones my mother cherished.

Hi Glynis and Chris.

Thank you both and it is really teaming with people who come down from Newcastle and beyond for this event.

I keep saying this but despite where I live having so many people living here the up side is there is a LOT to do close by. Often I have to choose one event over another.

End of this month £150,000 is being spent on an outdoor dance festival which is free to everyone. (If you don't count local council tax). We have international sports at less than £8 a day next month and a series of outdoor concerts both classical and pop in the Castle gardens. I am spoilt for choice.

Hi Caroline.

Sorry to disappoint but they were not shot on an HS10 but one was shot with the S100fs and if you click on that one you will find a whole gallery of shots with that bridge camera but if you want to know what I managed to do with an HS10 that I had for review for ten days then look at this gallery of mine here http://www.flickr.com/photos/cubeace/sets/72157624290083578/ and feel free to look up the exif data on shots that pique your interest.

Hi Micheal.

Visit http://www.whatsonmedway.co.uk/   No excuses Wink

Hi Nick.

Glad it brought back good times for you. It certainly does the same for me.

Hi Viv.

You are very welcome but I spoilt it by putting another shot after my intended last B&W.

The first B&W did get me one of my highest scoring photos in our camera club competitions.

Now re-ordered the last two photos to end on a B&W.

I just can't leave well enough alone Wink

Brilliant blog which deserves a lot more views than its got so far.

Its has every thing, great 'authentic' subject, great photos, lots of narrative with additional links etc and above all a 'feeling'' for the subject matter, which keeps our history alive.

I can't help feeling that B & W would suit it better (as some of your previous blogs did) but then again we didn't see in B & W at the time.

Anyway all that is irrelevant this is another of your first class blogs, thanks for sharing it with us.

ps I'm just off to like it right now.

Hi Ray. Thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed your 1940's photoblog. All fantastic images, love the candid shots and scenes capturing the time and events of the 1940's. The re-enactments are brilliant and the atmosphere is something else in these events. I enjoyed The Churnet Valley's Railway 1940's weekend and loved taking photos for my photoblog in April. Thanks for compiling and sharing. I have always admired your photography and appreciate your valuable input in forums, comments etc. Thank you Ray so much for all your comments and support to me. Best Wishes Alison Smile

I suppose the biggest compliment I can give is that while reading it, and enjoying it, I forgot it was a photoblog on Fuji.  My attention was held, right through to the end. That is not easy of late.

The photographs are professional and the many techniques used are splendid.  I cannot comment on the technicalities, and maybe that's right and proper, just what I see.  What I see, pleases the eye.

Well done then Ray.  Entertaining and very enjoyable.

Thank you for your appraisal ( very kind about the narrative ) but I have never done a blog in only black and white so it wasn't me.

Honest.

All my blogs are still up and running and have never taken one down.

Thank you both Kev and Michael. appreciated.

Hi Pam thanks and what kind of dance do you do ?

Hi Jen.

For what ever reason I'm glad you got away from it all for a short time, and as for techniques, does forgetting to take my glasses with me count as a valid technique ?  Smile

Hi Janice.

Confession time.

Even without my glasses I have an additional x2 magnifying eyepiece on my viewfinder and I can bring up all my current shooting settings real time on the back screen of my camera so though it may take a few seconds more to set up and check I'm not at that much of a disadvantage though I do prefer to have my glasses on me and do all the settings while viewing through the view finder. Glasses are only any advantage when reviewing pictures on camera because I can't focus on them properly.

Hi Ray,

Please accept my apologies, I'm obviously wrong. Maybe I'm thinking of one of your forum responses or maybe one of your previous blogs was so realistic that I thought of it as being in B & W, which is how I think of war time.

Either way please take it as a compliment because that was my intent.

Best Regards
