Honestly I like mine so far but haven't had it for long. Do bare in mind that it has no vibration reduction so a very steady hand is needed or a tripod.

Here are two examples.

Light aircaft hand held

Moon Shot hand held.

Jessops at Bluewater, Dartford in Kent. and yes it wasn't cheap. At around the same price is the sigma 150-500mm with their version of VR. I don't know if it's as good optically but getting a fast shot with this lens isn't easy. Centering on a moving object I find quite hard. I will know better when I go to Biggin Hill air show later in the year. If you have the 50-150mm range already covered by another lens the 150-500mm may be worth considering. The other thing to bare in mind is the weight. Holding the Sigma up to your eye for more than a couple of minutes is hard on the arms. Also when carrying around you must attach the carrying strap for the lens with the camera strap as I fear the strain of the lens might do damage to the camera coupling without it. It does come with it's own nice padded carry case. Also filters will be quite expensive due to it's front 86mm lens.

Two more shots. The first at 50mm. Notice the diggers above the wing mirrors

The second at full zoom from the same shooting spot aimed at the diggers.

I think these images are more realistic of day to day shooting.

You can get both lenses at about the same price. Luckily I got mine just before the recent price hikes for around £760. As I say I haven't see a picture taken with the 150-500 so can't really vouch for it but after looking at it, it is 1 f stop higher than the 50-500mm but the VR or OS as they call it; should help bring that up to a more usable shutter speed.

Actually I just found this users group on flickr for what looks like suburb shots taken with the 150-500.

I bought the Sigma 50- 500mm lens just before the price increase.

I use it for my Canon 400D, my Fuji s100fs would not focus fast enough for bird shots.

I like the 1 : 10 ratio especially when photographing bird life from a hide or on wetlands. I always use a tripod the lens is quite heavy, or if I am in an hide a bean bag.

I have this lens on a Fuji S5 you do need a steady hand and fast shutter but on any telephoto lens it is the same. Best on a tripod though. Overall I'm pleased with it.
