Advanced 'out of frame' effect

Here is a 'step by step' tutorial on creating a realistic 'out of frame' effect in Photoshop. In this instance we are adding some perspective to the frame for a more '3-D' effect. It's great fun, but does require a certain level of skill. We’re using Photoshop here, but there's nothing you can't recreate with any image editing application that supports layers.

Step 1

Start with a picture; although this effect works with just about any shot, it works a lot better with a photo such as this, with something obvious to 'jump out' of the frame.

Step 2

Turn the background into an editable Layer by double clicking on its thumbnail in the Layers palette, (when the 'New Layer' dialog appears just click on 'OK').

Step 3

Create a copy of your image in a new layer, (you can do this by dragging the original layer to the 'new layer' icon in the Layers palette).

Step 4

Use the rectangular selection marquee to create a selection roughly where you want the frame to be, (remembering to leave something outside the selection, here it's the horse's head and front legs).

Step 5

Choose Select>Transform Selection

Step 6

Drag the corners of the selection to create a frame that matches the perspective of the scene, (roughly), you need to hold down the CTRL key as you click in order to move the corners individually.

Step 7

Temporarily hide the upper layer and select the lower layer, (click on it in the Layers palette). With the selection created in steps 5 and 6 still active click on the Add Layer Mask icon.

Step 8

Make the upper layer visible again and select it. Reduce the opacity of the upper layer to about 50%, (this just makes it easier to see what you're doing), and roughly select the areas of the picture that will be coming out of the frame. Finally invert the selection (Select>Inverse).

Step 9

Press the delete key to remove the rest of the layer, (leaving only the area selected in step 8), and return the opacity of the upper layer to 100%. Hide the lower layer, (click on the little eye icon to the left of the thumbnail in the Layers palette).

Step 10

Now carefully remove the rest of the background from the upper layer. I'm using a layer mask but if you're feeling brave you can use the eraser tool. When you're finished 'unhide' the lower layer.

Step 11

Hold the CTRL key and click on the lower layer's mask. (This creates a selection based on the mask, in other words the frame shape created earlier).

Step 12

Expand the selection by around 15 pixels, (the exact amount will depend on the size of your original image and how large you want the frame to be).

Step 13

Create a new empty, (transparent), layer and move it to the bottom of the layer stack, (dragging it on the Layers palette), and fill the selection, (from step 12) with white paint. (Click on this step's thumbnail above to see this step in more detail).

Step 14

Merge the bottom two layers and create another new layer at the bottom of the layer stack. You can fill this with whatever colour you want as a background. I'm using a blue to black gradient fill, but the choice is yours.

Step 15

The finished result. Note that I've added a little reflection to the image, (we'll cover this in a future tutorial), as well as a shadow under the horse's hoof, but you can try your own 'finishing touches'.

Step 16

You can put the frame wherever you want, (and, as here, add a shadow). You don't need an 'action' shot to get a convincing 3-D effect. The key, as always, is to experiment!

Photoshop is around £1000! But there is a free alternative, Paint.net is virtually the same but at a much more reasonable price, FREE!!

http://www.getpaint.net/  <<< Highly recommended

Brilliant tutorial by the way, just did an "out-of-frame picture" and it looks ace! Thanks

Great feature I've made an attempt and put it on my gallery. I've also printer this out because I can never find these sort of things again so I'm collecting different tutorials I find and keeping them together. Big smile

Once again Great
