X10 dust in lens

I got my X10 in november 2011, just when it was released. what a great camera, i really love it!

At first i didn't notice, but after a while i found some dust specks inside the lens. Not a very big issue because you don't see them in the pictures.....but i was worried about the specks getting deeper inside the body and get to stick to the sensor!
And for a camera in this price range and with such a quality lens, there should be no dust inside!

So i send an e-mail to Fujifilm Europe the first week of january, and told them about the problem......it took a few weeks, but a couple of days ago i got a reply from the headquarters in Europe (Germany).  They told me to send the camera to their camera repair/service point in rotterdam (the Netherlands).
I hope they can clean the lens.....or maybe replace the camera if cleaning is not an option.

I think Fuji is doing very well with their X series cameras, and i am really interested in the upcoming X-pro1.
So i really hope Fujifilm will handle issues on a proffessional way, and i trust they will.

Greetz,
Ronald.

Hi Ronald - sounds like good service but depends what they get back and tell.  Hopefully, they will clear the dust.
Getting dust in sealed lenses has bene raised on here for other cameras and one piece of advice (from Ray Fothergill) was not to zoom in and out too quickly to avoid drawing too much air and dust in quickly.

Thanx for the reply.
I don't think zooming too fast was the problem, i am not a real action photographer. I like to take my time while shooting.
Besides that, i have a nice collection of prime and zoom lenses for my Pentax cameras (analog and digital bodies), and i never had big problems with dust getting inside the inner parts of those lenses. Some of the primes that i use are over 30 years old, and still pretty clean inside.

Those dust specks that are in the lens of my X10 are pretty big. I think they were allready in the lens.
I found some other topics on several photography forums regarding the same problem with the X10.

As i said before, i really really love this camera, and i hope to get my X10 back soon with a clean lens. I miss the camera allready!

Cheers.

I am very happy, got my X10 back today from repair!
The lens is cleaned, and the whole camera is checked.
The X10 came back with a service check sheet.  I am very pleased with the service from Fujifilm.

Cheers.

Hi Ronald.

A lot of people get the misconception that the dust is sucked in from the lens joint on a bridge camera.

That is not always the case.

It comes in from other places as well like the usb ports when they are not sealed properly or the gaps from the battery housings and other non weather sealed areas.

The inside expansion area of a super-zoom lens is much more volume than you would think and relatively fast twisting of the lens barrel will momentarily break the side seals and allow other particles other than air in .

If it didn't the lens barrel would spring back to it's previous position due to suctional vacuum caused by the increase of internal volume. .

Primes do not move much air volume from outside . All element movement is normally within the lens body and the movements much smaller. The back element may move but that's sealed between the camera body and the lens when in use .

You don't have to be an action photographer to use the zoom ring fast Smile
