Competition Dilemma
Submitted by Angela A on Wed, 01/02/2012 - 11:02
I am in a bit of a dilemma as to what image to enter in the competition this month. It is between two shots which are totally different (one a view of a sculpture, the other a landscape). If anyone has the time to look at my current entry (I have posted the alternative entry within), I would appreciate some feedback and thoughts. I hate making decisions.

Hi Angela, personally I prefer the present entry, think it's brilliant and very different. Then again I do like butts!!

Now if I was answering this, the one I'd tell you to go with would be the one I thought was less likely to win....heehee
But as I'm not that petty, I'll refrain from answering at all....lol
Best of luck with whichever one you choose Angela xx

Has he been at the Ready Brek?
Got a bit of a glow about him.....which I didn't want to refer to on the competition comment.

You have a whole month, why don't you wait and see what other pictures you can take for this theme. It's such a varied subject the possibilities are endless and should produce some excellent pictures

It doesn't matter Nick, as you can change your entry as often as you like before the deadline.

I noticed that too Kevin and also on some of my other images. I can't think what it would be other than being a bit too enthusiatic with the sharpening/a bit of dodging and burning when editing. I don't think it's as evident on the competition entry. Saying that, the sculpture has been designed to change depending on the light and weather. The stainless steel does sometimes give off a 'glow' and luckily the clouds did seem to frame the model perfectly at the time of taking the competition entry (I haven't added anything). Those are my excuses anyway.
Maybe HarpyImages would be able to answer the query because I noticed her lovely competition model has a Ready Brek glow too! LOL
Unfortunately, personal circumstances mean I might not be able to get out and about to take an entry for the theme this month Nick, so I have submitted an initial idea using a relatively new stock image. If things change and I manage to take a super duper shot then of course I will change.

Will be glad to take a look. Where's the landscape again?

Hi Angela A,
As a classic shot the landscape is fab, but i would say it's text book and been done before many times, don't mean it in a bad or rude way but it doesn't hold the attention as long as the sculpture which is more dynamic and thought provoking, plus has a lively, energetic feel with powerful sense of movement due to the perspective within the composition plus has more image originality to it's favour. It's also sleek and modern and very fresh. I also love the way the light hits the figure showing the surface isn't textured but extremely smooth so through looking at your image i know how it would feel if you were able to touch it due to your capture of how the light acts on the surface. Coupled against the blue and white of the sky (which always makes a great backdrop) plus enhances and is complimentary to the tones within the sculpture. You have made very good use of the perspective in the overall composition of the image, as viewers will start to view things starting at the lower right side in an upward movement and towards the left , as with this image the wave starts at the bottom then leads the eye up to the main focal point, being the figure, so has more of an impact for viewing. The way the figure is poised, leaves you wondering, waiting and half expecting him to come down towards you, conjuring the sense of movement, building up the dynamics of the photo.
I think as i said earlier the landscape is a nice image and shows a sense of perspective but hasn't got a strong main focal point within it's composition, the fence leads the eye through the image but not to a specific focal point along the way where the eye can rest & linger a while. What happens is, the eye just drifts along the fence in the image in one fell swoop all to fast. An added focal point ie. a cow/ sheep etc at the top left "rule of 3rds" point along the fence line would just give somewhere to hold the attention provoking questions in their mind. I noticed the orange string that has snagged on the fencing in the foreground.
Hope i haven't offended you as that wasn't my intention as i do like both images but gave you my thoughts as to why i preferred the sculpture over the landscape as the subject for the purpose of the comp, both images are wonderful and something to be proud of no doubt about that, but thought you might want to know my reasons for picking one above the other for your entry. Other folks may disagree with me, each to his own as they say.
So good luck and fingers crossed and hope my point of view helped you out.
Take care
