To Film or Not to Film?

Oh indeed thank God it's Friday! It's been an over full week so I embrace the 'rest' heartily.  Some prospect of snow maybe for sure..the forecasters' duality would be funny if it wasn't so familiar.  Either way I hope there is good light tomorrow.  Especially as I will have a friend with me who is very keen to take up photography.  She is presently saving for a DSLR but in the meantime has been given an old Pentax K1000 with original kit lenses!! How fab is that?!  So we got it some film and a battery for its exposure meter to work and actually got it up and running this evening after work!  She was like a 'kid in a candy store'! Okay, we both were!!

Doesn't it look a beauty?!  I was pleasantly surprised to discover how easy it was to convert from digital to analogue.  Of course only the results will prove how worthy the adventure but there is an infectious charm in its sturdy, weighty substance.

Well, I have to say the ice on the ground told us we would not manage much especially as we both left our gloves in bag back in the car!!  Unbelievable! If I wasn't living this I wouldn't believe it! Is there some kind of mind numbing hypnosis going on with a chant of 'you don't need gloves' despite the knuckle pains?!!  So after we laughed (at the beginning of our walk- I hasten to add it was a very different emotion shared later as we left the park) we threw caution to the chilled wind and positioned eye and trigger finger for the hunt!

A little B&W macro to warm up! Except it never did get warm!  -3 today!

But we both liked this accidental sculpture..it's a tree that's been severely cut..into what my imagination felt was now a 'guardian' as it over looked the pond and the climbing frames.  The lumps of white...ICE!

The world through a child's eyes: Bar on my cot, bars on my play-pen, bars on my climbing frame...bars keep you safe they say..and yet..do they not also speak of 'being barred', or of 'being behind bars'?

The thing is when you are small..all steps can appear as mountains!

As for my friend, she not a child but she's enjoying playing with her 'new' camera! Even though taking up photography at times feels like there is so much to remember. And there is! However, the thing about film is the waiting to see your results! Yes we have to wait 9 months for a baby to develop. but as we all know not everyone copes with even waiting for their Christmas/birthday presents! And yet, there is an excitement in the anticipation and pure enjoyment in being out there turning knobs and dials! She assures me this evening was an experience that felt like it could well be addictive! Funny, I remember that same sentiment 11 months ago! I think she may well have caught the dreaded, compulsive shutter bug! To Film or not to film? For my friend that is not an option!

So we left the park sated with our exposures to the elements..the earth, wind and fire...as another sun sets and the light retreated, so did we. Fingers? We knew we had them only because we could see them!

Thanks for the encouragement Stephen!  Yes, poor Fuji X100 didn't know it was entering the hands of an addict! It was quite exciting actually playing about with the film camera! And they obviously made them to last!  It certainly wasn't worn out!  LOL!

What a great gift! - cracking way to start your photo career!  I only switched to digital "full time" as it were, less than a year ago and still have my film kit which I use now and then.  Film teaches you not to be wasteful and think about the shot before hitting the button, digital, beacause it is instant and immediate, can make one lazy about the process.  Better to understand what is happening and how to achieve what you want than shoot a hundred frames and hope for the best!

Nice blog and I hope your friend appreciates what a fab pice of kit the Pentax is!

Lots of luck with it!
