Easy Balloon Burst Pics
Hang a water filled balloon against a dark background, mount the camera on a tripod, use a telephoto lens and keep the camera a few feet back to protect it from splashes, prefocus on the balloon, burst the balloon with a pin on the end of a stick (painted matt black to minimise its impact in the final image) then it's just a case of 3-2-1- pop the balloon ( tie the stick to a string that can be released or have a helper!) and fire the shutter at the same time - use a fast shutter speed ( at least 1/1000th, preferably faster) or a flash, the rest is, practice, timing and luck. I shot about ten and got a result on all, of varying levels of success-

This shows the set up and captured the burst early, with the top point gone but the main body of the balloon still intact...

Approach from a different point - different points of busrting will give a different "shape" to the burst

As this was done for a weekly IHC challenge, this was the one I opted for if you look very closely you can see the stick and pin just above the left hand "arm" of water - the black paint worked a treat!)
It's pretty easy to do - I would suggest outside unless you are blessed with lots of space, try filling the balloons to different levels, filling with water and air and tying off and bursting at different points - they all produce a different result.
Why not give it a go? - it's a lot of fun and can yield some really good images!

That looks cool
Should be a good way to get children interested in photography
Splashing with water and bursting balloons must be tons of fun with them..

Reckon you'll make a splash with this one, Paul *groan* Thanks for sharing, looks like a lot of fun, how many balloons did you get through?

Thanks for the info Paul, I didn't think you'd get such good results from so simple a set up. I'll wait until the weather gets a bit warmer though before I try this. According to the forecast it'll be 0 degrees C or below over here for the rest of the week so the balloons may be solid. lol.

Thanks guys!
@ Fred - as it says - ten!
@ Carl - I had seen articles and set ups etc that were so complicated that it was just a joke - sonic releases and all sorts of nonsense - seriously!; so I thought "there has to be an easy way", sat and thought for a wee while and this was the outcome. It's all in the timing of course.

Sounds like you will have to wait until spring arrives Uwe! :)

Hello Paul
Well done to you. They are very impressive shots. If one gets the timing right, they come out really great. It just shows what "mucking about" can achieve. I mean that in a positive way too. Looks like great fun. I might give it a whirl when it warms up!!! Lol
I think I might have some "balloons" around from my earlier courting days!!!
Thanks.

Good tutorial Paul,I did some a similar way using a dart to burst the balloon, your way with the pin is more controlled,I know you couldn't alter your IHC shot, but I found that if you gave the pics a black background it enhanced them, either use the blacks slider or flood fill black,it can bring out detail you didn't realise was there,I've put an example below
